Exploring the site
Historic site par excellence of mining heritage and tourist attraction of first importance in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, the Cité de l’Or offers a unique guided tour concept that allows you to visit the only gold mine in Quebec that allows visitors to go to 300 feet (91 m.) underground.
The Cité de l'Or proposes to you :
Complete tour of the site is of four (4) hours and includes the underground visit and that of the four (4) surface buildings, while and express tour is two (2) hours and includes the underground visit and a tour of the laboratory.
The "Gold in our veins exhibit" highlights the leadership role played by the Lamaque Mine for the regions' social development and the mining industry's evolution. Visitors will discover unknown facets of the lives of these miners, brave men and proud builders of a village, a town and lastly, the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region.
Visit of the Mining Village with an audioguide complements the interpretation circuit composed of 5 interpretation panels. The visitor becomes witness to the Mining Village's story while strolling along in the Village. The concept of this audioguide is based on a radio show in which historic current events take place. Special guests are the village residents of today and yesterday!
The visit of the historical house exhibit: "At Home In Bourlamaque/Chez-nous à Bourlamaque" is set in a 1949 residential décor. This exhibit allows the visitor to catch a glimpse of the way of life existing at the time and that still characterizes the lives of the people living in the Mining Village even today. Social and moral dilemmas of the time are played out.
