Temporary exhibition

Sigma’s mine frescoes (1950)

During the demolition of the drier and of Sigma’s mine headframe to make place for the open cut mine, several frescoes made directly on buildings walls were found and saved from the demolition and then they were framed and stored at La Cité de l’Or (old Lamaque’s mine, next of Sigma’s mine). In 2009, the frescoes were camed back out to be exibited to the public.

The documentation of this cultural element is still in its early stages. We are still looking for the exact name of the artist, the exact year of the work and the exact realisation context.

At the moment, the information that we have shows us that the frescoes would have been done after World War II by an immigrant worker in Sigma’s mine. This miner would have done drawings in the lunchroom and a manager of the mine would have asked him to continu his drawings on surface where the miners were walking.

The frescoes clearly shows dangerous situations at work and represent a sensitive way for health and security at work.

Come discover in exclusive these frescoes that arouse the interest and revive the memory of the mining industry in Abitibi. The exhibition is presented at the old Lamaque’s mine drier, on the site of la Cité de l’Or.
